In the quietude of November 2020, amidst the global pause brought on by COVID-19, Lucas Corneliussen found a silver lining. As the restrictions of the pandemic unearthed a heightened longing in the birding community for a deeper connection with nature, Lucas saw a novel opportunity. Drawing from his extensive birding knowledge, gained from over a decade of exploration across diverse habitats around the globe, Lucas established California Birding Tours as a means to run pelagic trips out of Bodega Bay. Designed to bring together a community of birders, Lucas offered a chance to participate in tours, that would transcend the barriers imposed by the pandemic. Lucas's initiative flourished, turning isolation into an expansive network of birders united by their shared passion, each eager to spread their wings long before the world opened up again.
Born and raised in Marin County, California, Lucas started birding close to 15 years ago. As a student at the University of California, Berkeley, Lucas is well on his way to completing his undergraduate degree. He loves exploring California and frequently travels abroad to explore the world's diverse landscapes, observing every bird he sees along the way. His work in ecotourism is only the next step in his career, a showcase of his decade-plus of birding experience across 5 continents. In the past, Lucas has worked as a bird bander in Denmark and Australia, as well as on projects with the US Forest Service and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, highlighting his expertise in research and environmental stewardship.
